ELECTROCHEMICAL PROTECTION

Galvanic Corrosion: How the Sacrificial Anode Works

Suburban RV water heaters utilize a heavy carbon steel tank lined with a protective porcelain glass glaze. During road travel, vibrations, temperature cycling, and thermal shocks inevitably produce microscopic micro-fissures in the glass lining, exposing bare steel to hot, oxygenated water.

The Law of Sacrificial Cathodic Protection

When two dissimilar metals are submerged in water (an electrolyte), the metal with the more negative standard electrode potential corrodes sacrificially to preserve the other:

  • Magnesium Electrode Potential ($E^0$): -2.37 Volts (Most active).
  • Aluminum Electrode Potential ($E^0$): -1.66 Volts.
  • Iron / Steel Tank Potential ($E^0$): -0.44 Volts (Least active).

Because Magnesium is significantly more electronegative than steel, an electrolytic galvanic current flows from the anode to the steel tank. The magnesium rod literally corrodes away atom by atom, keeping the steel tank 100% immune from rusting.

When to Replace: The 75% Rule

Inspect your anode rod once every 12 months. When more than 75% of the outer magnesium has dissolved and the central 1/8" steel core wire is exposed, the galvanic protection zone is severely depleted. Replace the rod immediately to prevent premature tank rupture.

ELECTRICAL TESTING

120V / 1440W Heating Element Multimeter Test

If your RV water heater heats fine on Propane but water remains cold when plugged into 120V campground shore power:

  1. Disconnect 120V shore power cable.
  2. Remove exterior black electrical junction box cover on tank.
  3. Disconnect both wire leads from element screws.
  4. Multimeter set to 200Ω scale across element screw terminals:
    • Healthy 1440W Element: 10.0 Ω nominal (Acceptable field range: 8.8 Ω to 10.5 Ω).
    • Dead / Burned Element: O.L (Infinite resistance). Commonly caused by turning 120V switch ON when tank is empty (dry fire).
